Dolbadarn Castle is one of the most idyllic castles built by the rulers of Wales before the Norman conquest. It was constructed by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth in the early 13th century to guard Llanberis Pass. It is, perhaps, best known as the site where Llywelyn imprisoned his older brother, Owain, after the latter’s failed attempt to seize power.
The keep, a round tower, is the last remaining substantial structure from the caste, as the rest of it was constructed using dry stone techniques, which are easily disassembled by anyone in need of building materials.
It is only a little more than a twenty minute drive from Isfryn to a large pay-and-display car park just below Dolbadarn. However, it can be difficult to find a spot during the tourist season.
