Castell Criccieth

Criccieth is one of a number of castles constructed by Welsh rulers in response to the pressure of Norman invaders. It was begun by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth in the 1230s, and then expanded upon by his grandson, Llywelyn ap Gryffudd. It’s location is stunning, on an outcrop of rock overlooking Ceredigion bay, with two D-shaped towers being the most distinctive features of the castle.

The castle is a half-hour drive to the south of Isfryn, and there is plenty of parking to be found nearby on the streets of Criccieth.

If you’re looking for a treat before or after seeing the castle, Cadwalader’s ice cream, right down the street, is well worth a visit.
